When Is The Deadline To Register To Vote

I got a letter through my door today saying if I don't register to be on the electoral roll they were going to fine me £1,000.

Sorry for the bad image, I don't own a scanner and I'm too ill to pop to the library.

I don't want to be on the electoral roll, I don't want to vote and I certianally don't want people to know where I live and send me offeres for ****ty credit cards and stuff.

Can they fine you for simply not wanting to register?

It's the law. You have to do it or else face the consequences.

I guess they have had problems with people not voting during the general election, and now they are practicly forcing you to sign up.
My household got a letter similiar to that, but without the fine, it forced you to put your name down for a certain date or your rights to vote are taken away for 2012.

It's got bugger all to do with voting, like they give a crap if you vote or not. It's so they can trace you for unpaid council tax and utility bills (as clearly stated in their credit check 'warning') and just so generally the government knows where you are living in case you commit a crime.

Regardless, enforced democracy never works. How can you expect someone pushed into a poll booth to vote seriously? I'd contact them and find out exactly want they want to do with your information and how little wyou can get away providing them with!

Lol they send me this bull**** all the time, although I've never been threatened with a fine.

When you return the form, tick the box saying you want to opt out of the edited register.

You better register then :rolleyes:

There's a tick box for 'edited register' which prevents junk mailers getting your name/address.

I done it online and ticked the box saying I was a student registered at home, even though this is my home, I am registered in the city at another address, I highly doubt that are going the check.

There is no enforced democracy. It's your right to not vote, and nobody will force you to.

It is a legal requirement to register.

You don't have to vote though, and you can opt to not appear on the edited register (which is the one that people can buy). It's pretty quick too, you just fill in the form they sent you or if you don't have it print a registration form off their website.

I may be wrong but I think the reason you have to register is jury duty.

EDIT: Oh and after looking through it only just occurred to me that you may well still half live at home with family so you don't even have to register at uni if you don't want. I personally register at both though so I can vote in either place.

It is the law to register. You don't have to vote when the time comes around though.

Forcing someone to sign on to an electoral register is demanding that they participate in the democratic process. Voting alone is not the only part of that process.

I understood what you were saying, I just couldn't really tell what your argument was.

It's not The Law at all!! It's an ACT..
It is Lawful that they ask you, but it's only Legal that you respond.
The letter is sent to The Occupier, there is NO CONTRACT between the individual and the council.
Under council rules, not giving information for two consecutive years, removes you from the register.
I have official agreement from my council that I am removed - yet they persist in threatening me
